IDirect3DDevice9::Present() crashes [BFG 7900 GT OC 256 MB]

I bought DMOMM last summer and used to play it just fine, then lost my CD. A week ago I had an itching to play it again and picked it up via Steam. Now, despite the fact that I have the same computer and graphics card as when I last owned it, I'm getting crashes left, right and center. When playing normally, the game refuses to load up anything after early Chapter 1. After forcing it into DX8 mode, I managed to get all the way to Chapter 3, but now it's crashing every time at a certain point and no amount of fiddling with the DX/graphics settings has helped.

The error I get is the IDirect3DDevice9::Present() error box followed by an invalid memory reference that lots of other people are reporting. My cpu is a little on the slow side, but I've got a good card and decent RAM, and can play the game at 50fps with decent graphics settings, so I don't feel my computer is at fault here.

Questions:
Q1.
DirectX Files Tab: The file d3d9d.dll is a debug version, which will run slower than the retail version.
Did you install the SDK version? If so, why? It has no advantage for gaming.

Q2. You have a lot cd-rom devices.
Is this
Drive: L:
Model: GL2121K FCF132L
a virtual drive?

Q3. How old is your current Steam installation?

Your settings export seems alright (a bit on the low side), no problem at all.

To do:
1. Enlarge and fix the paging file to 4096MB min and max. See DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 2] <---probably this alone will already solve your random crashes.

2. Update your nForce4 drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_win2k_6.86.html

Hi BlindNero, and thanks.

Q1: I develop games, that's why I have the SDK version.
Q2: Yes, but I've tried removing all virtual drives and it had no effect.
Q3: 3-4 months. I'm updated to the latest version or so.

I will try the page file and update my drives.

Just tried it (without forcing DX8) with an expanded page file, updated drivers, and the virtual drives uninstalled just to be sure: Immediately got a crash. I'll try with DX8 mode on as well.

2. Why force DX8??? Force hardware DX9.0:
right-click on the Steam-created DMoMM-singleplayer shortcut on desktop > Properties. In the "Target" box, after the last letter, hit spacebar once, then add the parameter:
-dxlevel 90

Launch the game. Go to Options, see that this resulted in the following settings:

IMPORTANT!!! After you made your changes and checked that the game runs fine now, it is important that you first quit the game and remove the parameter you applied to the shortcut, otherwise next time you double-click on it your settings will be overwritten again.
But on your card you should force DX9.0c:
On higher and highest end systems with videocards that have hardware support for HDR you can use the

-dxlevel 95

parameter. Then tweak the settings a little to find the optimal balance (even though they're above *recommended*), for best looking while at the same time smoothest gameplay. Settings on my P 650@ 3.4 Ghz / 2GB PC2 5300 RAM / Audigy 2 ZS / GF7800GT/256:

I can't play at all with 9.0c, it won't even load up my saves, crashes the game out with a memory not read error. 8.0 is the only way I've been able to play at all, although its still very unstable.

I tried those exact settings you screenshotted (after expanding the page file), it crashed when loading my save game.

But, try to start a new game (not loading old saves)!

You have only 1 Gig RAM; in that case the game NEEDS the 4096MB paging file!

Suggestion: you can also try a standard 4:3 resolution, then replace
"ScreenWidth"=dword:00000480
"ScreenHeight"=dword:00000360
with
"ScreenWidth"=dword:00000400
"ScreenHeight"=dword:00000300
Other suggestion: enable vsync in the settings:
"mat_vsync"=dword:00000001
Edit the export in Notepad. Save, exit notepad. Then doubleclick the .reg file you just edited to import it back into registry.

-Set your Steam language to English

-in the Steam > My Games list, right-click on DMMM singleplayer > Properties > "verify integrity", and "defragment".

Here are my observations so far on 9.0 vs 8.0, I'll make sure they still hold true with the large page file

With DX9:
- I can play the prologue and the first part of Stonehelm, when I go into the second part of Stonehelm the game inevitably crashes
- I cannot load up any save games. Attempting to do so will cause my monitor to error out with NO SIGNAL, or occasionally gives me a memory not read error.
- The game crashes with the IDirect3DDevice9::Present() message and memory references a lot, even in the first two areas. After the game crashes, I cannot start it up again without rebooting the computer (it does not actually reboot my machine though)

With DX8:
- I can play the game up to part 2 in Chapter 3, it seems to hang when a certain piece of dialogue between two Blackguards starts (just noticed this, I'm gonna play around with sound settings)
- I can load save games just fine, never any crashes with that
- The game crashes maybe once an hour randomly with the IDirect3DDevice9::Present() message.

I've already verified / defragmented the game and my hard drive, btw.

Is your PSU underspec? "No signal" indicates failing videocard. In DX8 it doesn't load sm 3.0, no HDR, etc. Either your card (is not overclocked?) is faulty or your PSU is. The "No signal" indicates it is not your system RAM at fault, but the GRAM. What PSU do you have? Do you know its brand/exact type?
Btw: have you done the minimalistic starting up via msconfig?
=9=. Keep the programs running on the background to a minimum.
And shut down any chat program, like mIRC
And if you have RefreshForce installed, shut it down.

Many programs don't need to start up with Windows (especially not when gaming), some can even block games to run at all.

>>> Click Start > Run... type in:
msconfig
click OK. On the start up items tab, untick unnecessary programs, like:
-antivirusscanner
-printer
-Office
-MSN
-P2P programs
-webcam
-WindowsBlinds
-disable instant-messaging programs, so quit Skype

-peerguardian (can block multiplayer completely)

Reboot PC for the changes to take effect.
