Re: ATI / nVidia alternative mobile drivers

Post by Blín D'ñero »

ATI: Mobility Modder [Driverheaven]
FINAL version released May 2009.

The new FINAL version is now 1.2.0.0 and has an installer. Discussion Forum

Changes:
- Added support for Windows 7 drivers
- Fixed problem in driver modification with the 9.2 and higher drivers

So what's the deal, what exactly is Mobility Modder?

Hopefully some of you coming to this page will already have used our older Mobility Modder for XP but for those of you who haven't I guess it is time for a brief history lesson. I know these things can be extremely boring, so i will keep it short.

ATI have for many years had their hands tied with laptop manufacturers (OEMS) who request that ATI do not offer support for their device in the Catalyst Driver. This may seem strange, however makers such as Dell may have implemented their own support system and they do not want their customers downloading "reference" drivers from ATI's home page.

Terry Makedon: AMD Manager for Software Product Management Graphics Product Group issued Driver Heaven with the following statement in April of 2007:

"AMD (formerly ATI) introduced the concept of Catalyst Mobility which is a generic driver that works decently for most laptops. The only way we are able to do this is through permission by a laptop manufacturer (OEM) to include their device in the Catalyst Mobility. We were the first company to provide graphics drivers for laptops to the general public, and we believe there is great value in this. At this point we only have permission from a few vendors and I personally wish more of them would let us. My suggestion is you contact your manufacturer and ask them to have your laptop included in Catalyst Mobility. As for Vista specifically we do not have permissions yet, but as soon as we do we look forward to releasing Vista drivers for laptops."

Mobility Modder, the evolution

Unfortunately if you have just spent a few thousand $/£ on a new laptop and you want to keep your graphics drivers updated this leaves you in a bit of a pickle and many people frequently are waiting for their OEM to furnish them with new drivers. Right now the only option is to keep emailing your OEM to request that they update their drivers on a regular basis. However, we all know in real life that this rarely makes a difference.

This is where Driver Heaven comes to the rescue and has done now for years with our FREE Mobility Modder for Windows XP. Over 8,000,000 downloads would suggest that many people wanted the newest ATI drivers on their laptop, with good reason.

With the release of Windows Vista, things have changed, our old mobility modder didn't work correctly as many people on our forums reported, so we have created a new release which is specifically made for VISTA. Currently this has undergone internal testing only so please if you are unsure about running beta software please wait a while until it goes to final build. We would however appreciate feedback on the application in our forums. With your help we can make it better!

The application is recoded in .net framework by the wonderful Ruud Ketelaars (author of the original DriverCleaner (not one of the copycats which are currently riding on the name success of our application) which is natively supported in vista and it is a very compact little program which will install no spyware, malware or anything we could class as dubious. We are enthusiasts just like you guys, so its a simple download with nothing remaining on your system.

Ok, let me have it, how do I use it?:

This is a step by step guide on how to run and use Mobility Modder on Win7/Vista AND XP, if you follow these instructions carefully in a step by step manner you will be fine. If you don't then you more than likely will end up with a driver that doesnt correctly work so you have been warned ! (Don't panic, even if you don't mod the driver correctly you won't hose your OS, the driver just won't install (like it did before you came to this page - so pay attention!))

BEFORE INSTALLING READ THE STEP BY STEP GUIDE
(see the excellent guide on their website  )
Download https://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php

NVidia: Laptopvideo2go
What is a modded INF? What is the Performance and Quality INF?, The untold story.

All drivers come with an "Installation INF(ormation) file".
This tells the installer how to install the driver.
The INF has the instructions to what files to copy and where.
It will also setup settings to install with.

The INF also has a list of products that it will install for.
nVidia provides UDA (Unified Driver Architecture) where the driver should work for all their released GPUs.
So the driver itself will support ALL GPUs, but the INF the driver comes with will only support a selected set of GPU

nVidia by default don't support laptop GPUs with beta and WHQL driver updates on their server.
This is left up to the OEM to organize. I assume nVidia must charge to have an OEM driver made or be included, as they are very rear for OEM to actually update a video driver.
So an OEM driver has specific instructions for that laptop (ie model specific) and will only work with a select few laptops.
So a Toshiba OEM driver with a toshiba INF (nvts.inf) will only work with the models included in that INF.
For an constantly updated overview of ODM/OEM INFs found by us in drivers go HERE.

This is where we come in.
We have made up a database of all the GPUs that nVidia have made or are about to make (or were going to make but abandoned).
This database we then split up into sections, Mobile, TNT, Desktop, and Quadros.
We then added the tweaks that are needed to make each of those work.

Then as part of another project we collected the settings to enable everything that is hidden inside the driver.
You can now overclock, use VMR and many other little tweaks, that nVidia normally keeps hidden or only makes available to OEMs.
We combine the 2 sections above to enable all tweaks to all GPUs.

And what you see then is the modded INF that you download seperately.

The modded INF will install on any machine, it should work normaly most of the time.
Some machines may need additional tweaks or different settings, there are 1000's of possibilities.
So sometimes a feature may not work unless you fiddle with the driver or the INF settings.
I have in the INF many possible fixes included that may need to be enabled if you experience problems.

Now, you will need a modded INF if you have a:

Laptop and want to install any other driver other than the driver specific for your machine.
Desktop or Quadro and you want to try a OEM laptop driver.
TNT based desktop and want to try a 8x.xx+ driver.
Laptop or Desktop and you want to try a Quadro based driver.

I hope this explains what INFs are and how they work and what is changed to make them work for everybody.

And then a quote, don't know from where, i lost the source...
The files are the same as the WHQL ones, but without the WHQL certification. As soon as you change the inf, you invalidate the WHQL certification anyway, so using the actual WHQL file usually isn't a big deal.

There's one very large exception, as some of you have discovered. The new DRM copy protection on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD disks requires an intact WHQL driver with an unmodified inf. If you replace the original inf with one of ours, you'll get a black screen. I doubt there's anything we can do about that.

We usually do replace our WHQL-candidate drivers with the final WHQL versions, but if you don't want to wait you can grab it from nvidia's site, or from the computer maker that published it.
