wont launch, frozen black screen

im not very tech savvy so this is probably my only shot at fixing this. my comp can run crysis and empire: total war just fine but can't run half-life2, vampire: bloodlines or this game, which all use the source engine. for all those games it does the same thing, say its about to luanch and then the screen goes black and the only thing visible is my cursor, what the hell! tell me what to do please. steam version btw, updated and everything

Hello dgoldgunner.
Is this a fresh install of Steam? Or did you move (copy/paste) an old Steam copy from a backup. Your PC looks fine. Your problem indicates a corruption with Steam. Can happen for several reasons, one of which is you changed videocard, or other hardware changes, after install of Steam. Or as i said, an old Steam installation. Your post contains so little info and guessing isn't gonna solve anything. More info please.
Also are you talking about the singleplayer?
