Re: Single player errors and crashes

Post by goteki45 »

Changing the paged pool size, snd_mixahead, and lowering the audio acceleration to basic seems to have done the trick! I started a new game and made it up to Chapter 5 with no crashes, and then saved the game and quit since I had to go prepare dinner :D

The worst I could see was one area where my game stuttered a little bit (where the game takes control of the camera when you find Arantir and the Shantiri crystal in the sewers), but there were no crashes so far. Thanks for all your help!

A few questions for now though, what effect will changing my paged pool size from 0 (auto) to 256MB have on Windows in general or my other games? Since it seems like the root is in system memory, would it help Dark Messiah out more if I purchased a 2GB stick of RAM down the line to bring my system up to 4GB? If I do add more memory, would it be better to turn the paged pool size back to auto or some other value?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I've never needed to change the page pool size before and I just wanted to know anything that could come about from it :)

I'm very happy for you that the game now runs as it should!

That paged pool size is a measure to ensure your system isn't lacking it. But the game seems to prefer a 4GB paged pool size no matter the physical memory size, so even after you expanded the memory sticks, just keep it.
But don't just add a 2 GB module. If the modules aren't identical it might or might not work out right and -depending if your motherboard supports it- you could lose dual channel. For best compatibilty, replace what you currently have by a 4 GB kit.
