When you install Steam, it asks for your login data (either new account or existing account). Once you put that in, your Steamapps folder should be created (or recreated based on your history) automatically, containing all your Steam games (that make your 'My Games' list in Steam.
One of the good things of Steam is that you can always uninstall Steam and delete everything belonging to it, then reinstall your operating system, then reinstall Steam and when logging in all your account files will be recreated again. In your case it looks that it has not been done.
This might have something to do with your dvd version of a Source game not willing to launch.
Don't get me wrong: it is possible to have the Steam version of DM installed next to the dvd version. But it IS a Valve\Source based game and also from the dvd version the Registry key with the game settings will be created under the Valve key no matter if you have Steam installed or not.

I downloaded it a week or so ago and it was updated yesterday.
Download one of the games you have via Steam?.

You mean "Checked for Steam client updates" so you installed the latest from 18th May?

My question was: when you download one of the games (you have a license for) via Steam, then you automatically get a "steamapps" folder, with a folder in it carrying your account name. The games you download go into. So could you download a game please? Btw, why don't you want to download Dark Messiah through Steam again?

When you look at your My Games list, is there any game installed?

I havent actually downloaded it from steam.... all Ive done is activate it on steam using my code.

I have 1 game in my games list that is installed and that is deus ex:invisible war .... and I cant get that game to run either.

I had downloaded deus ex:invisible war not long after installation.

If you want me to download a game you will have to wait till next month because I am currently capped at the moment and my internet speed is quite slow till next month.

Ah, ok. The picture is somewhat becoming clearer. Your internet is slow and traffic is capped. That makes Steam not an attractive option. Your Steam does not work allright (possibly it is caused by your traffic limitation), but this situation is not comfortable for testing things out.
You activated the game on Steam before. That's allright, you might have advantage of it in the future: you can always download the full game (singleplayer and multiplayer) through Steam.
I had downloaded deus ex:invisible war not long after installation.
Well, Is it in your My Games list? But when you open your Steam directory, you can not find a steamapps\*your account name*\ folder? Where did that downloaded game go to?

But your goal is to play your dvd version of Dark Messiah. Now, i was suggesting your -maybe- somewhat corrupted Steam installation might be messing things up, so what i suggest is to completely uninstall Steam. If you can find your downloaded Deus Ex files, just copy them into a "Archive" folder you create somehere on your hdd so you wouldn't have to download it again.
Anyway, uninstall Steam completely. And delete any remaining folders might there be.
Also uninstall Dark Messiah completely and delete the Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic folder (still containing the patch files).

Defragment your hdd. Use Diskeeper Lite (freeware) for that, rather than the Windows inbuilt defragger.

Now before anything else, could you post screenshots covering your 'installed software' list in Control Panel? You can use the upload attachment function of this forum to post the images.

No, not reinstall it. Get rid of it completely. For now, that is. You want the dvd version Dark Messiah installed and running, without Steam messing up in any way. You can always reinstall Steam later.

Yes, but also please answer: where are those files in the first place, you keep telling you don't have a "steamapps\*your account*\" folder....

When you reply, you see the field you type into? Look below that, see the tab "upload attachment". Click "Browse" to point it to the picture(s) on your computer, then "Add the file" to upload it. Then the next picture etcetera. Please make sure the pictures are .jpeg and not larger than 800 x 600.

The reason for the pictures is that i might see other installed software that could be messing up things.

1. Ca internet security suite. Tell it to exclude mm.exe. Some antivirus and systemprotection software think it is a virus. So tell it to exclude. Then remember to always disable (reboot without) antivirus and systemprotection before installing an application and before running a game.

2. You have .Net 3.5 and Capicom installed but not even Visual C++ 2008 redistributable and its service pack. I'm not sure if you need it but also not sure you don't. ATI Catalyst Control Center needs it (it installs it automatically) so why would nVidia driver package not need it.
Visual C++ 2008 redistributable
Visual C++ 2008 SP1 redistributable

3. Using programs like CCleaner and Eusing free registry cleaner can damage your registry to a point of irrepairable corruption.

Click Start > Run... type in
msconfig
hit Enter
On the startup tab, untick all items
click OK.
Reboot the PC.
If you haven't already done so, uninstall Dark Messiah and delete the Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic folder (still containing the patch files).

Then reinstall Dark Messiah (untick DirectX and multiplayer). Then apply both patches (make sure they are unblocked), first 1.01 then 1.02.
