PC Runtime Error

[Duvhaas]

I posted on the Assassin's Creed forum but I figure I should probably post here as well.

I get a runtime error during startup. dx10.exe basically. Everything on my comp is legitimate and updated as far as I know.
I'm just curious if its me or what so I can fix it.

Hello Duvhaas and welcome.
Runtime error with GeForce 9800 GTX often relates to them being factory overclocked; see if you can try to downclock the card to stock speeds. Usually that would mean 100 Mhz less on core, 100 ~ 200 less on Memory. The tool to do that is nVidia system tools 6.
How does the DX9 version run?
Did you install the patch 1.02?
Did you or not, edit the ini file (not that you're supposed to, just asking)?

I installed the patch yes =)
I don't normally like overclocked cards, but this 9800gtx+ is an RMA so they could have sent me anything. EVGA style and I know they sometimes ship theirs overclocked.
I haven't fiddled with the ini file I felt that probably wasn't a good idea right off the bat. Kind of thinking it is a simple fix. Gonna do the downclocking.

Ok, according to Nvidia the video card clock mhz are as follows
GPU core 740MHz
GPU Mem 1101 MHz
GPU Shdr 1836 MHz

That's what my card is, according to over and super clocked card specifications on newegg these numbers are slightly inflated. Therefore, my card is factory specific. =/ oh well.

Maybe, but that doesn't matter. Lower the clockspeeds anyway. 100 Mhz on the gpu, 200 Mhz on the memory.

Strangely, my chipset is newer than the one from the intel website... furthermore, the versions are different from what is in my dxdiag. for example, the updated version of the intel 4 series chipset is 9.0.0.1009, however, my computer is adamant about it already having 9.0.0.1011.

The strange thing is in my dxdiag the version is 6.00.6001.18000... they seem unrelated, but clearly this is the chipset:

The CPU is a Q6600 Quad Core and it is in the release notes of the Gigabyte motherboard I have as being compatible... As important, no other game has any issues... Fallout 3 included.

Aha. Make sure you installed the latest DirectX Redistributable March 2009 9.26.1590

Right-click on the downloaded file > see if at the bottom of "General" tab there is a security blockade. If so, hit button 'unblock'. Extract the directX9.0c package into a "New folder" you create. Then open that folder and doubleclick the dxsetup.exe.

Hmm. Apparently "optimization" does not work well with Realtek onboard chip, on Vista.
