but should I keep both sets on at the same time?

What do you mean? :confused:
Use the best RAM you have in your machine the corsair PC2-6400. And just keep the slower ram safe in a box.
Don't put both sets in your PC; as your motherboard will set the total RAM timings (speed of read/write) according to the slowest (the PC2-4200) and you lose dual channel mode as both sets are not identical.
Just only use the PC2-6400.
Might your RAM die one day (anything can suddenly die) you have the PC-4200 as spare part whilst waiting for the RMA then you still can keep using your PC.
