Re: Building a new PC

Post by Blín D'ñero »

Oh it probably doesn't recognize the SATA drive. In BIOS, set the IDE emulation for the dvd drive off.

Your dad's pc has
Speed supported PC2-4200 MB/sec
Type 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM
You bought Corsair PC2-4200 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-533 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit
That 'dual channel' is an option the modules support (if the motherboard supports it), but they aren't strictly that... and should work in single channel mode as well.
What happened? The motherboard didn't recognize them? Had you set the RAM values to "Auto" before installing the new modules?

They just didn't fit in the slots! I had to take ram from my old computer...

Did you turn them around? The hole isn't in the middle of the part; so they can only be placed in one way, the other won't fit.

Hehe don't worry, I'm certain about the ram not fitting...

About my 750 drive... I went in the BIOS and it gave me a choice between IDE, RAID, AHCI
Is that what I have to change? If so, whichone do I select? If not where, and precicely what do I have to change in the BIOS?

Oh wait. I was too busy with reading about the new ATI cards and technologies...

---> No, leave it at IDE.

The 750 is your second, the 320 is your boot drive?
Boot = SATA 1.
second = SATA 3.
I'll have to find a pic of your motherboard, but it's also in the manual.
The SATA connectors on the mobo are probably paired as
SATA 4 - SATA 3
SATA 1 - SATA 2
C:\ drive is of course plugged into SATA 1
the second in 3 or 4

[EDIT}:
see image: https://www.3dnews.ru/_imgdata/img/2007/12/07/67660.jpg
I see they are differently placed than on mine. They are probably numbered, but you can also find the numbers in the manual, try another connector for the 750.

240-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for desktop computers. DDR2 is a leading-edge generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to transmit data very fast.

Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not come in 72-bit or registered modules.)

Standard DDR2 240-pin DIMMs are available in DDR2 PC2-3200 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-4200 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM, and PC2-6400 SDRAM.

To use DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR2 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket or a DDR DIMM socket.

The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins. Image

The notch in a 240-pin DDR2 DIMM is closer toward the center of the module

This DDR2 is what your dad's PC uses according to Compaq.
DDR2 is what you bought from NCIX. Didn't you?

I changed the 750g to the fourth slot, and I also noticed something: To connect my two stata drives, I used 2 red cables, but the cables were different: both have the same connectors, but one of them has it comming out at a right angle and it sais "AsLink" on it. Does that change anything? Because I still don't see my drive

I just checked in my dad's computer, and the ram that's in there presently is: PC3200 DDR ram

*EDIT: HAHA I,m such an idiot! I think the problem is I didn't creat any drives on it -_- is there a way to do so after installing windows?

Well, the drive has to be detected in BIOS. As long as that is the case, you can then in Windows go to format the drive.
Right-click on Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management. If the drive is properly detected in BIOS, Windows should see it too as one large unallocated space. Right-click on it and select to format it, 750 GB will take half an hour or so.

The cables are identical internally, only one or two have an angled plug for convenience when you have 4 drives connected. Just use the one suits you best.

Your dad's PC uses DDR and not DDR2? Then his PC is not the one i linked to (you could have corrected me then?) or Compaq's information is not correct.

[EDIT}: Dammit! I made the mistake. :clown: This is your dad's PC: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... ct=3184155 and it has PC 3200 DDR Ram indeed. I'm sorry for the trouble i caused. :eh:

Well, you can even put 4 GB (4 x 1 GB) in it for optimal performance....
