download and install Bink Player.
Try to play the game's fmv's (in the game's directory > Media folder). If that was susccessful, again try the game.

They are .bik. And there should be sound. So possibly you have a audio codecs problem. Or it could be that one of your media players messed up.
Try this:
uninstall ALL mediaplayers you have (you can always reinstall them later) like Winamp etc. and maybe also codecpacks like ffdshow.
Download and install K-Lite codecs pack (Standard or Full); when installing choose NOT to install its player.

You should try this because it is seen for instance that GOM player messes with audio subsystem making certain games refusing to launch, also a Quicktime plugin in Nero conflicting with Securom copyprotection; but many more are possible i never heard of. A highly annoying and complex matter. I guess having a dedicated soundcard (like Creative Audigy or X-Fi) instead of onboard audio like you have makes such problems non-existant because i personally never had such issue.

You unblocked the file before attempting to install?

Redownloaded from another mirror?

I have heard of that issue, forgot the details though. Could you give a hint, which dll exactly it was missing?
You can probably find it in the Log in Steam directory.

OK, so that wasn't it.
Time to reinstall Steam completely. From a fresh copy of their latest installer.

So, do this:

-backup your game(s) using the Steam backup function
-uninstall Steam and manually delete remaining files and folders
-defragment your hdd(s)
-clean your registry from Steam
-Use CCleaner to get rid of the last crumbs you may have missed
-reinstall the current version of Steam (redownload from Valve: on this page click "Get Steam Now - Free Download")
-restore your game(s).

Oh, and no Active Desktop and no Screensaver.

I have said this before, there is something not right in your dxdiag not showing the Free space / Total Space on your hardd disk drives. I must say you are hard to help from your not very informative responses, but if you have enough free space on a seperate partition there is one 'power option' that always works: install XP a second time on another partition so you have dual boot. All you install after Windows are the chipset drivers, (already having SP3 you can skip Windows Updates), and the audio and videodrivers. And freshly downloaded Steam and the game of course. The game should run rightaway without any hassle (unless it is a non-legal copy or it is legal but you haven't registered it in Steam yet.)
