Keyboard

From Review: SteelSeries 7G gaming keyboard (crunchgear.com):
One of their flagship products is the keyboard I’m typing on right now: The 7G. It’s aimed at gamers, but more in that it’s extremely durable and reliable as opposed to being covered in buttons. Read on for the skinny.
... is exactly what i expect from a keyboard. Nothing more, but most certainly nothing less.
I have checked its availability which is not very widespread but i've found a few etailers. When i can afford it i'll take one or two.
My Merc Stealth is a very fine very solid and trustworthy board but it's slowly wearing off letters: A S D and E are becoming abstract. Its second minor to me is its whole area at the left with the gaming keys: i don't use them! I would just saw that section off. I long for a similar board with just the layout of a normal board.
In the near future i will have to replace my Merc because of the blind letters anyway.

The 7G looks exactly like the board i need.
CrunchGear’s recommendation
This is a premium keyboard, and you’re paying a premium price. What makes it premium, you ask? It’s a bit like the difference between a regular flashlight and a Maglite. Sure, the flashlight lights up and you can see stuff in the dark, but the Maglite does that and it’s also solid enough to deflect a bullet or be used as a bludgeoning tool. It’s not likely you’re going to need that capability, but it feels good to know it’s there. The feel of this keyboard is the same feel I get from a Maglite, or a hard pair of workboots, or a canvas backpack you know will never die. If you’re okay not having gimmicks like LCD screens, dials, and touch-sensitive buttons, all of which are very breakable, then this is probably the last keyboard you’re ever going to have to buy. But the fact is that few people can justify spending $150 on a keyboard at all, less still for one with as basic functionality as this one. It’s probably $150 worth of sturdy, but it’s up to you to decide whether that’s what you want in a keyboard.

Another SteelSeries 7G Keyboard Review at Extremetech:
If you're a gamer, what sort of keyboard should you use? There are those with custom key layouts like the Z-Board, or with game-specific features like the LCD on Logitech's G15; keyboards with new features specifically targeted at games.

Then there are keyboards like the 7G from SteelSeries. It has no features especially targeted at games, but rather focuses on improving the core mechanics of the keyboard itself—the number of simultaneous key presses, the action of the keys themselves, the fundamental build quality. Is this the right way to go?
IMO yes that is the right way to go!
The unit also offers an amazing anti-ghosting feature provided it is connected using the PS/2 connector. This means that the device will recognise simultaneous key presses not just for a couple of keys, but for every single key on the unit which will prove to be very useful.
OOooops But it has no backlight...! :(
Although the keyboard lacks fancy features such as extra macro buttons and an LCD screen, it is clear that a lot of time and effort has been invested into the build quality and durability. The only thing we would love to see in a future revision is a backlit keyboard option for those late night gaming sessions. Many people end up using their computers in a dark environment and a backlit device can make life a lot more comfortable.

Keyboard

Yesterday i bought the Steelseries 7G. Wow, wow, wow. They claim it to be "fastest" keyboard in existance. I could not imagine it to be noticeable, surely the Merc Stealth is already fast enough?
Well it IS noticeable, the Steelseries 7G is lightning fast!!! Playing NFS:Shift with the Steelseries 7G the responsiveness from fingers to car is indeed immediate, which is decisive: very noticeable in 'mastering corners'.
USB OR PS/2 ?

We absolutely recommend using the PS/2 connector when possible. First,it will give you total freedom with no limit to the amount of simultaneous key presses. And, equally as important, using the PS/2 may just improve your overall gaming experience. The reason is that when you use a USB keyboard your computer is actually using CPU time polling your keyboard. The higher the polling rate the more CPU time is used to perform the polling. And because of the built-in debounce rate found on any quality keyboard, any polling rate above 200Hz is simply a waste of CPU time and really just a result of pointless marketing hype. Unlike USB keyboards a PS/2 keyboard isn’t polled at all. The keyboard simply sends a signal to the computer as key presses are made, which causes a hardware interrupt, forcing the CPU to register the signal.

I'm beginning to realise the Merc Stealth really has a fundamental delay problem, and it probably is an USB thing.

Mouse

I'm VERY happy with Logitech G9. Equipped 3 of my PC's that i daily use with it. [NOTE: the date of this post - happiness did not last for much more than 2 years]
On the bottom 5 small Glide MS (and not the ones designed for the G series because they are too large).
Mousepad: Steelseries SX and Steelseries Experience 1-2 (aka Icemat, glass).

Mouse

My oldest Logitech G9 started wearing out 2 months ago. Every now and then, Single click became double click. Happened ofter and ofter. Yes, i have used it a lot (gaming), for 4 years...
I won't buy anything Logitech anymore. They received a great deal of my moneys in the past for their products, but i'm done with them. First their keyboards went downhill, their wireless mice are crap (in 2008? after about a year, my expensive G7 started to expose a 2-second-freeze every 2 minutes, i RMA'd it within warranty period but the new one did the same after 6 months), and now also the corded mice. They use an "aggressive" market strategy by being omnipresent in shops everywhere, affordable price tag, looking good. But under the hood it is budget parts and technology. A greedy business model, in stead of a quality business model.
I still enjoy their THX certified speakersets ( i have 5.1 and 2.1 sets), that are fine, not very good but good enough. The mice are very good until a certain moment (it strikes you out of the blue one day) and you can do nothing about it.

Mouse

How to disable the mouse's side buttons: X-Mouse Button Control (Freeware) (highrez.co.uk) .
I never install the software that comes with the mouse. But i do hate those side buttons, and this simple program fixes that!
X-Mouse Button Control is a free Windows application to reconfigure your mouse buttons and expand the capabilities of your mouse!

You are able to provide application or window specific mappings, which means an application or window can use the mouse buttons differently from another. For each profile you can optionally define up to 5 'layers' of different button configurations which you can switch between using hotkeys or mouse buttons.

You can also alter the behaviour of the scroll and tilt wheel functions, fixing windows that don't normally respond to these controls.

Profiles are automatically activated by moving the mouse over the defined window or alternatively, when the specified application is active. This has many uses, for example: •In games which do not natively support the extended mouse buttons, you can map keys to each button.
  • Changing the behaviour of the mouse over certain windows, such as making the mouse wheel change volume when hovering over the system tray.
The extensive list of functions available to map to your mouse buttons includes options such as:
  • Send any keys using the simulated keystroke editor
  • Launch any windows application
  • Copy/Cut/Paste
  • Media control (play/pause/stop/volume/mute etc.)
  • Capture screen (or active window) image to clipboard
  • Click-Drag [Sticky buttons/keys]
  • Support for Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 & 8.1 with some OS specific features such as 'Flip 3D (Vista/7)', Win+X, Charms bar (Win 8)
  • And much more!
For more information about using and configuring X-Mouse Button Control, please check out the new user guide (mirror).

Well the best mouse from my experience is the
  • Corsair M65 Pro RGB.
Accuracy, Weight (it comes with added weights) and reliability are the most important features to me, and it delivers royally. On My Gaming / Photoshop PC.
    I had previously:
    • Razor Imperator 2012 - First impression / useage: design is very good, - weight a little too light for my strong hand.
Complaint: it started loosing track sometimes. Weirdly after some shakeing it always re-finds the track (it's a laser-mouse), it's still working, moved to secondary PC.
Complaint -2: more and more often, single click becomes double click. Annoying....
    • Razer Mamba Tournament Edition - design is good, - weight a little too light for my strong hand, no complaints about useage yet. Still in use on tertiary PC.
    • Logitech G7 - design is good, weight very good (it comes with added weights), but accuracy only good until it started stuttering after 2 years. Unreliable. Replaced.
