Re: My new PC [Nov 2009]

Finally i have solved an issue i had since i moved from 4870X2 to 5870 crossfire: cold boot would always hang at Windows starting screen. Holding down power button to shut off and then restart PC would always succeed.
I had no other issues, and anytime rebooting always succeeded too, so this was only an issue after the night off and boot up first time at day. I figured i would fix it eventually. Not in a hurry, because the system seemed to perform excellently anyway, it was only an inconvenience.
I thought.
Performance is better now, taking my previous Vantage benchmark results as comparison.

Basically what i did was
  1. reversed to my original bios 610 (to rule that out)
  2. physically remove 1 card
  3. load bios defaults, edited only most basic necessary settings but kept everything related to CPU and RAM at Auto
  4. installed:
    • Win 7,
    • intel chipset, ATK0110, marvell, VC_redist, windows updates, directx feb2010
  5. <everything ok, created restore point>
  6. installed:
    • catalyst 10.4, left CCC at default (no overdrive)
    • creative x-fi drivers + apps
  7. <everything ok, created new restore point>
  8. power down, put in second card and rebooted
  9. catalyst found second card and autoapplied crossfire
  10. defragmented.
  11. Powered down PC. Went away for couple hours.
  12. Turned on PC, bootup successfull.
  13. Applied simple overclock in BIOS (3.8 Ghz, 19x200 / RAM 1603Mhz, 8-8-8-24). In cpu-z, turned out that the "Auto" vcore is a whopping 1.416 instead of the modest 1.225 i always had it at...
  14. Enabled overdrive, set clocks to 900/1300.
  15. Tests 100% successfull.
  16. Powered down PC. Kept it off for couple hours.
  17. Turned on PC, bootup successfull.
  18. vcore 1.416 is rediculously high though, much too hot and not even needed as my cpu runs 3.8Ghz excellenty at stock voltage. Weird is that when i manually set the vcore to 1.416 coldboot fails.
  19. concluded it's not the vcore, but other settings. Changed to bclk 182, multiplier x 21. vcore at 1.21250. Coldboot success.
Next day: yes confirmed success. So, mainly: lowering the BCLK (and making use of the 21x multiplier to maintain 3.8 Ghz) did it. Settings on previous page updated.
