Dark messiah stopped working after attempting to launch.

Post by Tha Duffman »

So, well: I bought DaMM yesterday after my retail version got its cd scratched pretty bad.
After having a few problems installing it, I finally got it working. But I've encountered a few weird problems:
-The multiplayer unistalled itself after installing the singleplayer part.
-Trying to launch singleplayer makes steam load it for a few seconds, after that Vista gives me the error:
"mm.exe has stopped working"

Hi Duffman.
Which version of the game did you buy after your "retail cd" got scratched?
Tha Duffman wrote:The multiplayer unistalled itself after installing the singleplayer part.
How did that go about exactly, did you see it happen?

What possibly could have happened is:
Your dvd got scratched to unreadable state, so you bought a new one. But you didn't uninstall the game from your PC, you installed the new one over it. Causing your multiplayer (Steam, registered with the previous serial) to die, and singleplayer to refuse to run.

What you should do is completely uninstall the game and manually remove the files from Steam.
  • 1.The following steps are for uninstalling Steam singleplayer.
    BlindNero wrote:
    1. Launch Steam. Open the My Games list. Right-click on dark messiah might and magic single player > select 'Delete local content'. This will remove the game from the list, but the files will still remain (because Steam does a bad job: the full game is still there...)
      Reboot the PC.

    2. Navigate to your Steam\SteamApps\*your account* folder and delete (hold Shift+Del) the folder named
dark messiah might and magic singleplayer
      including its contents.

    3. Remove the singleplayer game from the Source entry in Registry:
Click Start > Run... type in:
      regedit
      click OK.
      Navigate to the key
      [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\mm]
which you see in the picture below, and highlight it.
Delete the key (press "Del" key on your keyboard).
ONLY delete THIS key, and not the other ones you may find.

      Image
After we reinstall the game later you may notice that the key is recreated automatically; at this moment though it must be gone.

    4. Look in your Start > All Programs > if you have a Ubisoft > Dark Messiah of Might and Magic entry.
If so, select > Modify Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Installation, it launches a menu, select 'Remove'.
The process will prompt you to restart the PC, do that.

    5. Now look if you still have a folder on C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. If so, delete it.
  • 6. Go to Steam directory > delete ClientRegistry.blob
  • 7.Then install the multiplayer: open Steam while the DVD is still in the player. Click register a product on Steam. After you put in the serial, the download will start.

Well, I will try to give you a better desciption in a timeline like thing while I'm going to delete the local content.
At first, I installed it from the disc a month ago, but stopped playing it as I kept getting a CTD loading the 4th chapter (Which I found can be fixed way to late)
Trying to fix it I reinstalled the disc version a few times, but then got the blin32 error (Which I also found out that can be fixed pretty easy, way to late again *sigh)
I had an eager to play this game again, but my disc got scratched pretty bad (which I fixed now with some repair kit stuff)
Then I bought it from steam after unistalling the retail version again. At first I had some trouble getting steam to install the singleplayer part: Steam crashed as I was trying to install it.
So well: It got to the messy part here (where multiplayer unistalled itself)

After a few restarts and reboots I got steam to start installing singleplayer. As the singleplayer part was installed I restarted my pc.
Then the multiplayer simply was gone, after the restart. So now I'm here.

I really hope unistalling and reinstalling etc. helps as you posted, I'll try to update with results when its done. (If I finish this late I won't be able to respond, going to a Topgear Live event  )

Edit:
About registering with the multiplayer part:
My serial is already used on an really old steam account, So I'll have to contact steam support to change that. (Or would a steam version multiplayer and retail singleplayer go along?)

How would that be? You bought the game again you said so then you have a new serial.

1. You must remove all remains of the Steam and Retail version! Just like in my first reply.
2. Go to Steam directory > delete ClientRegistry.blob
You don't need to contact Steam, your old serial will just die, and you start all over with this new serial. :)

I suppose you still had/have retail version remains.
Once your PC is completely cleansed from the game, go into Steam > Register a product with Steam, put in your new serial. Then download will start and after both are 100% you should be ready to play. But take the cleaning absolutely seriously or your new version will not work!

I'm pretty seriously cleaning at the moment; I'm currently at patching the fresh installment. But I might not have been clear: I got 1 retail and one Steam-bought version. I never got another serial after buying the steam version 2 days ago. And the retail has its serial still attached to an old steam account. But I can fix that by sending Steam support a few pictures of my serial :)

Oh....
Let me get it straight...
PREVIOUSLY:
You had both single- and mutliplayer installed in Steam although you originally started with a retail-DVD. You installed that, then registered and updated through Steam.
NOW (since 2 days): you bought the game again via Steam. Why???? If you play both via Steam your DVD scratched/unscratched is irrelevant, with Steam you never use the DVD anymore..

to get it clear for ME:
You didn't buy a new dvd but bought the game again via Steam TRUE/UNTRUE

Your original retail dvd version has been scratched to unuseable state TRUE/UNTRUE
You bought a new dvd TRUE/UNTRUE

If you have a new DVD and install the singleplayer outside Steam (as a standalone game), you never need to register and the serial is irrelevant. The multiplayer part is always downloaded and played in Steam so there should be no need to renew that serial, the old one should still work. And since you registered the game once, you can always download the single- and multiplayer via Steam, no need to buy a new DVD, ever.

If you buy a new copy of the game (whether new DVD or newly bought via Steam)... it always carries a new serial.

Do NOT install the patches on the Steam version of the game, they are for the retail DVD version only! The version in Steam is automatically updated.

To generalise:

User who has bought a DVD copy in the past, and then registered the game in Steam in order to download/play the multiplayer, never has to worry about the dvd getting scratched because once registered in Steam, you can always download both single- and multiplayer games through Steam for the rest of their life. So never has to buy a new copy again.

User who insists on keeping the singleplayer game outside Steam (as a standalone game), always needs the DVD in the player when launching the game, and when it gets scratched to unreadable state, needs to buy a new DVD (it's cheap), and then watch out during installation procedure to only install the singleplayer game (so, tick off multiplayer).. no need to register a new dvd in Steam at all.

If i understand you correctly, you have now registered twice, with 2 different serials (one old, one new)...?

Haha, I have a talent to always get people confused. :D
But I got the singleplayer part working again, Chapter 5 atm without a single error or crash (Exept for a goblin spawning with his head through the floor, was kinda funny)
I'm propably going to attempt installing multiplayer after finishing singleplayer.
But I'm glad I can play it again, so thank you very much!
