Due to the position of my PC (on the floor, off to the side under a desk that has a low backing), it is hard to get at the back USB ports without moving my PC around a bit.
With the mouse plugged in, it is a little harder to get at the other one. Since the front USB doesn't work, if I need to use a USB memory stick, I have to get it plugged into the rear.

My case is getting a little dusty on the side air intakes, so I will have to open it up soon anyways to 'clean' it out (damn that air spray bottle gets really cool at times)
When I do that, I will try to see if I can see where the wires at the front of the case are at, and if I can get at them easily or not. (the one PC place did make mention of the case being a 'tight fit' in some spots, so I wonder if that might be why the USB is not plugged in... or if they simply forgot about it...)

Thanks for the info on the sound card installation. I will have to try to remember that if I do try to install the sound card myself.

I will probably have to 'survey' the MB before I do anything in the case. After the previous MB troubles, I will be nervous if there are any of those little capacitors near where I have to work.
Boldly going forward, 'cause I can't find reverse.

Do it safe: if you wear latex ('surgical') gloves, you can't distribute static electricity to the components. Those very thin gloves are cheap and thin enough to keep finger-freedom and precision.

You could also buy an USB-hub?

Do USB Hubs work well with things like USB memory sticks?
If I have other USB devices plugged into USB Hub (such as a mouse, maybe also a keyboard), will it slow down the speed at which data can be transferred to/from a USB memory stick?

I got the case opened up to clean it out with an air spray can, so I got around to doing the other things.

I got the sound card in.
I went into BIOS and disabled the onboard audio.

Windows registered a 'multimedia audio controller' when it was starting up.
The driver disk setup recognized it as a sound blaster audigy.

I hope that is acceptable, because those little slots on the case are hard to get opened, the little cover plates are not screwed in place yet won't budge much. :wth:

I also checked the USB cables while I was in the case.

It appears to be plugged in already.
The 'USB' cable was plugged in, as was the other smaller plug.

third image there. Using the image zoom helps.
The far right side, the 4 blue plugs.
The USB plug itself is on the second blue plug from the bottom.

Crappy representation of what I see with the pins in those slots...

The smaller plug is plugged into that green spot on the lower right corner of the pic.

I tried to check if they were in right, and they were very snug, and I did not want to try pulling the USB one out, and I can't get a good grip on the smaller one due to its position in the case.

On a side note, the sound card is in the middle of the three PCI slots, which had the only 'open' slot in the back of the case (I swear they got those damn cover plates spot welded or glued in place or something at one end because I can't see what is holding them in place...)
Boldly going forward, 'cause I can't find reverse.

The Audigy is recognized, so you have a winner: good PCI slot! Update the drivers from their support site.

I don't understand what you are trying to say... :eh:

usb connector as i know it:
.0000
00000

The 1394 looks exactly the same. But do not mix them! On my boards, the usb is always blue, and the 1394 is always red.

Downloading your motherboard's manual now...

however, it's not even needed, i'm sure: those 4 blue ones are the 4 x usb the motherboard has.

.... YES confirmed by the manual.

My USB drawing was upside down.
It is (when CPU and RAM are on top, and the blue USB connectors are on bottom):

00000
0000.

(page 1.5.1 in the manual)

Yes, it is in one of the blue ones.
So the USB plug is in right?
With one of the holes (lower right most) in the USB cable end being over the spot that lacks a pin?

If it is in right, then perhaps something else is wrong with the front USB ports not working.

One thing I noticed when I was looking in the Device Manager.

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller (2 identical entries)
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller (5 identical entries)
USB Root Hub (7 identical entries)

Is that normal for their to be multiple identical entries of those 3?
Boldly going forward, 'cause I can't find reverse.

Yes. Some of them are the keyboard and mouse usb ports on backside, others are the rest on backside. They all should work. The front usb, if they work are also in the list. Doubleclick on either one of them so you can check details and if it's working properly.
