Intel Chipset INF Utility 9.2.0.1015 ?

Post by Blín D'ñero »

According to many websites, Intel released an updated Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility, version 9.2.0.1015. Google brings 124.000 results, none of which direct to intel.com. This version is nowhere to be found on Intel's own support and download site, nor is it recognized in their "Search". Their latest offering in their downloads section is still version 9.1.1.1025 dated 12/22/2009.
So i contacted them via their form. Awaiting their answer.

From one of the 124.000 sites, like Softexia page, i quote ngohq.com/news:
Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility 9.2.0.1015
Posted by Regeneration on December 2nd, 2010, 04:59 PM

Intel has released a new build of the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility providing driver support for their motherboard chipsets for Windows operating systems. The Intel Chipset Device Software installs Windows INF files to the target system. These files outline to the operating system how to configure the Intel chipset function properly:

- Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
- PCIe Support
- IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
- SATA Storage Support
- USB Support
- Identification of Intel Chipset Components in the Device Manager

This software can be installed in three modes: Interactive, Silent and Unattended Preload. Interactive Mode requires user input during installation; Silent Mode and Unattended Preload do not. This software also offers a set of command line flags, which provide additional installation choices. If you're updating, don't forget to add the -OVERALL -OVERIDE command-line.

I received reply.
Dear Mr. ,

I found on Lenovo's site:
Driver Name : Intel Chipset driver

Family : IdeaPad Y460p,IdeaPad Y560p

File Size : 2.34 MB

Driver Version : 9.2.0.1015
Seems to indicate it is meant for Sandy Bridge ...

Lenovo's IdeaPad Y460p, Y560p first Sandy Bridge notebooks

Lenovo brought out two IdeaPad notebooks that are the first known to be using processors based on Intel's Sandy Bridge architecture.

The package contains:
************************************************************
* Product: Intel(R) Chipset Device Software
* Release: Production Version
* Version: 9.2.0.1015
* Target Products: Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family
* 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) processor family
* Date: October 04 2010
************************************************************
So, what has happened? One website announces this new chipset driver, without details. Others immediately accept it as the latest, without any investigation.
It is the latest UNOFFICIAL set meant for the not yet fully released Sandy Bridge processor family
Anybody not using Sandy Bridge should just stay with Chipset Driver 9.1.1.1025.
The package is an updated version in the sense that the new hardware family is added. So the package contains all previous. So installing this on any older supported Intel chipset *should* do no harm at all. But:
  • it is pointless unless you actually HAVE the 'target products', and
  • likely there is a reason Intel is not offering the package publicly yet.
Oh and: do not install this on an older PC thinking it is an "update" for your older chipset, it is not. Doing so can completely mess up your healthy Windows PC. Chipset drivers should always be installed right after installing the Operating System, before anything else.
