PC developing unusual problems.

Post by rditto48801 »

Hello.
It seems my PC is developing problems that have got me baffled.
I originally thought the problems were with a game called Borderlands, since that is when the first problem occurred.
The sound would 'cut out', then start, stutter, and suddenly sound like it is looping the same split second of audio repeatedly. I had to reboot as it would not stop.
The problem occurred again with there simply being no sound. A check with Winamp showed it refused to play music files. The problem mysteriously vanished and Winamp started working again.
Then the problem occurred again, the sound cut out in Borderlands, Winamp couldn't play music files, etc.
While trouble shooting, I noticed my Sound Blaster volume control, when doing diagnostics, failed with DirectSound, even if dxdiag showed sound was fine with the tests passed for sound and music. The sound driver diagnostics does pass both the sound drivers and the Windows Multimedia tests.

I attempted to reinstall the sound drivers, just to be on the safe side, when things really got weird.
First, Spy Bot tried to stop the install, saying it had found malware. A search online showed it was a legit file, so I let it continue. A later anti-virus scan of the file showed nothing.
After rebooting, I saw the 'logo' screen for my MB, something I don't recall seeing before. It then went to an OS select, showing 2 instances of Windows XP.
#1 has minimal resolution and gives me a message of Windows not being activated.
#2 has my computer seem to boot up normally without trouble.
As of right now, my PC has no sound at all, even though I have not done much since rebooting. dxdiag is failing across the board for sound. Although the music test says it is working, I hear no music.

Toying around with the ATI audio drivers (re-enabling them, for starters) did not help at all, but it initially tested everything working with all tests passed (all sounds heard).
Also, it seems the RealTek drivers for the onboard audio have somehow been reinstalled after I tried reinstalling the Sound Blaster drivers for the Audigy SE.

I will be doing a full anti-virus scan shortly (deep scan overnight, since I have stayed up to long trying to troubleshoot), but I want to make sure all bases are covered. I already did a scan with Spybot and it found nothing.

What was the name of the one utility that can be used to check the status of Western Digital based HDDs and look for early signs of HDD trouble?

On a side note, nothing has really changed with my computer aside from updating Winamp yesterday. Other than that, there have been no changes made in recent weeks aside from automatic windows updates.
I am at a loss as to why I am suddenly suffering these problems. I have played Borderlands for quite a bit in recent days, without the problem showing up before now, so I am not thinking it might be hardware or software, and possibly not anything to do with the game itself.

Hopefully I can sleep good and tackle the problem with a clear mind tomorrow.

Also, an up to date dxdiag report.

I thought you had an Audigy card. Is that a budget version? Looks to be a SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit"
Anyway, that's your soundcard/ Why do you then still have ATI HD Audio and Realtek enabled. Your onboard Realtek chip should be disabled in BIOS, and the AMD/ATI Audio disabled in Device Manager (and everytime you install ATI/AMD drivers, always select "Custom install" so you can uncheck the Audio drivers part.
First, Spy Bot tried to stop the install,
Whenever you install/reinstall/update drivers or applications, always disable or reboot without system protection programs like "Spy Bot" (-Search & Destroy?) and anti-virus. The "malware" it thinks it sees is probably the Creative registration and/or Creative's autoupdate function and/or the hardware detection function (to check exactly which Creative card you have in your PC to prevent it would install wrong drivers) that's in all their soundcard software.

I don't know what software your "Audigy/SB Live 24-bit" brings in your All Programs list > Creative? Is there a "Console Launcher" that lets you choose between "Entertainment" or "Game" mode? Can you enable EAX and adjust the settings?
I am used to this on my X-Fi and previously on my Audigy's. In the past i always had a problem when running Carmageddon TDR2000, EAX enabled in the game's settings (but it's a bit crappy at that), after quitting the game i had very poor sound on my PC. What i always had to do was Creative Diagnostics > Restore all settings to Defaults.
EDIT: yes you should have:
  • Creative Device Control.
  • Creative EAX Console.
  • Creative Speaker Settings.
After rebooting, I saw the 'logo' screen for my MB, something I don't recall seeing before. It then went to an OS select, showing 2 instances of Windows XP.
That usually happens after a violent crash like a failed overclock. Asus motherboard's self-protection kicks in and sets the BIOS at factory defaults. So you also get that (useless) logo screen you probably disabled in the past. You then have to enter the BIOS and manually set all your preferences again.
#1 has minimal resolution and gives me a message of Windows not being activated.
#2 has my computer seem to boot up normally without trouble.
#1 could be Safe Mode, but that should be activated just like Windows normal mode.

Now if today Windows boots up normally, look in Creative control panel > diagnostics > Restore all settings to Defaults.
Reboot into BIOS, and disable the onboard audio (that's the Realtek)
Back in Windows, go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager > under audio and sound devices right-click on each of the two AMD HDMI audio devices > disable.

Re: PC developing unusual problems.

Post by rditto48801 »

When I got up and checked my PC, there was a 'rapidly repeating sound' type of thing going on once the monitor powered up and the screen saver (the basic star field one) stopped. The anti-virus reported finding 8 viruses, but none were in quarantine, so it must have deleted/fixed them all. I have no idea what it found, the report might as well be Greek to me. For whatever reason, it spits out stuff in what appears to be 'web page' format, in a text file... so a lot of 'code' or whatever it should be called...

The sound card is a Sound Blaster Audigy SE (PCI).
The driver I have is the one it directs me to on the Creative Labs site when I go to look for drivers, and select the Audigy SE. It is the second driver on the list (with the first being listed as being for Vista and Windows 7)

I never installed the ATI HD Audio. I usually keep it disabled, since it usually ends up getting reinstalled itself. As far as I can tell, simply installing/updating the Catalyst drivers (with custom install and only the video drivers, nothing else) results in the ATI HD Audio drivers getting reinstalled. I wonder if they integrated the damned thing into the CCC itself, due to the 'video' settings and whatnot in CCC.

I did not install the RealTek audio drivers. They were there after I rebooted after reinstalling the Sound Blaster drivers.

EAX is apparently disabled right now.
There is no 'reset to default' option under Diagnostics. There is however a 'default' button next to the row of buttons where the diagnostic button is.
For stuff in 'Volume Control'
I have Default, EAX Console, EAX Settings, Speaker Settings, Diagnostics, Graphic Equalizer.
There are also the basic volume controls, with tabs for Basic and Advanced. A small 'drop down' selection at the top has one option, for SB Audigy (to the left of that it says Surround Mixer)
There is a 'Creative Restore Defaults' under Creative in the start menu, but that gives me an error that not all options could be reset to their default settings.

I have noticed I get the Asus logo, but not the POST stuff.

Although I thought I deleted it long ago, it seems there is still an old instance of WIndows XP on my older/backup HDD (E: Drive).
Would it be safe to simply delete it? It's about 1gb in size.

I usually forget SpyBot even has the 'real time protection' until it actually pops up. I forget why I got that active anyways. Must have forgot to disable it a while back when I last reinstalled Spy Bot (which would have been when I got the new HDD a while back).
My anti-virus usually behaves itself when it comes to installing programs.

For the boot up troubles.
I was forced to 'power down' the computer at one point (via holding in the power button) , as it simply was not responding as it should have been. It appeared to pop up the 'boot up' stuff after I had held in the power button. This was after failing to get the computer to reboot previously when the one audio error occurred, and I had thought the computer had simply locked up when shutting down when attempting to restart the computer in the first place.
(sound error occurred, went to troubleshoot and reboot, apparently locked up on shutdown, tried to use reset button, which apparently did nothing, then went to hold in power button when boot up stuff popped up right before the thing finally turned down before I really had a chance to let off of the power button)

Stress and being tired do not help things, I know that much.

What all do I have to do in BIOS?
It has been a while since I have had to do anything with BIOS.
All I know is I need to disable the onboard sound, and make sure the onboard video is also disabled. According to Display Adapters in the Device Manager, only 'ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series' is listed.

Overall, my computer seems to more or less be running normally, aside from the boot up selection, and the sound acting up. Or in this case, no sound...

Edit:
Odd thing during a reboot.
An 'error' box popped up after reboot.
In the blue part at the top, it said "Rthdcpl"
The box itself said "EAccessViolation"
Plus the 'ok'. button.
Also, the ATI HD audio drivers reinstalled themselves after I rebooted disabled/uninstalled them.
Boldly going forward, 'cause I can't find reverse.

Start with entering in BIOS and change:

The SpybotS&D option is called TeaTimer. Disable that function in SpybotS&D's preferences.

That's the one. If that keeps refusing, you could also try System Restore.
If System Restore does not help either, i'd reinstall the whole Creative drivers package.
"Rthdcpl" is probably the Realtek HD control panel. It should not pop up any message because it should not be alive at all. (being disabled in BIOS)...

Ok.
What about the old instance of WIndows XP I found on my older/secondary HDD?
Is it safe to just delete that since it is not on the main HDD?

I dug through the advanced mode of SpyBot and found the TeaTimer setting and un-checked the box for it, so it should be disabled now.

Yes, unless it's a backup of some sorts, made by some program you have?

Can you open any of the folders (if there are any) in it? My Documents? Anything you recognize in the contents, being old?

My secondary E: drive HDD (80GB) did used to be the main C: drive HDD years ago (about 2006), and the now E:/WIndows folder properties says it was made April 26 2006.
The contents of the E:/Windows folder seems to be more or less the same as the C:/Windows folder.

I have no programs that would backup Windows, so chances are, I have somehow forgotten about the old Windows XP install from when the 80GB used to be a main HDD almost 5 years ago. (my PC case and 80GB HDD are the only thing leftover from that older PC).
If it is an old install of XP, then with the BIOS being reset, perhaps it views the older XP install as being a valid program to boot with?

On a sort of related subject.
Are there any particular brands you might recommend for USB flash drives?
I am thinking of getting one (or two) for backup purposes.
I got one USB flash drive, but it no longer is large enough to backup anything but more important files (some game saves can take up a good chunk of space, so I can't even back up many of them).

Oh i see, yeah just delete (Shift + Del - to bypass the recycle bin) that old Windows XP!

Flash drives: they're all good. Difference, besides the size of course, is mainly the speed: more expensive = usually faster. But for backup speed is irrelevant.

Oh, and "OS select" = the boot menu. Since you deleted the old XP you don't use, make sure that one is deleted from the bootmenu as well.

The 100% failproof method:

Edit the Boot.ini File:
  • Right-click My Computer > Properties.
  • Advanced tab, > Startup and Recovery > Settings.
  • Under System Startup, click Edit.
  • the boot.ini textfile will open

This is a default Boot.ini file from a Windows XP Pro computer.
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
This is a sample of the above Boot.ini file with a previous installation of Windows XP on a separate partition.
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
  • Rename the second Windows XP Pro to for instance "XP old".
  • Reboot the PC till you get onto the "OS select", select the old one. If it indeed is the wrong one, you are now 100% sure which one to delete.
  • Reboot, go to the boot.ini again, and delete the old one.
  • Save, and exit Notepad.

I worked on BIOS after posting my previous post.

Onboard audio should be disabled now.
Quick Boot was already enabled.
I disabled the full screen logo on bootup, so I can see the POST now on bootup.
I noticed the older IDE HDD was set to boot up before the newer SATA HDD in the BIOS boot priority, so I put it to do the SATA drive first.
It now just boots up Windows, without going to the boot select screen.
Also, the RealTek entry in Device Manager is no longer there.
There was no trouble in just deleting the old XP folder on the older HDD.

Here is what is shown in my boot.ini when I first opened it. I changed nothing for now, since it had only one OS entry by the looks of it.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /usepmtimer
With that stuff hopefully out of the way, I can get back to troubleshooting my audio problems.
