What is not normal in your Programs list is "Dark Messiah Might and Magic Single Player - Ubisoft version", since you said you have the Steam version.

You probably have installed the DVD version in the past and tried to update it through Steam. First thing Steam then does is move most of the game files to the Steam directory. Thus it became a Steam game. Unfortunately, that method has turned out to be a source of corruptions.
Best has always been to either run the 100% DVD version or the 100% Steam version.

If you confirm this is your case, i'll help you to fix it.

That´s very unlikely. I have never possessed the DVD version. Just picked the game up during the recent steamsale. The link in the Programs list is to the steam version, if I try to uninstall it, it links to steam.

On my PC that runs the Steam version only, i do not have that seperate line for Dark Messiah in the Programs list at all.
In Steam it is a Source game, not a Ubisoft game (like it is in your list). Weirdness from your end. :???:

On my other PC that runs exclusively the Ubisoft DVD version (and no Steam installed on that PC at all), i do have that line as in your picture in Programs and Features.

Thats very strange then. I can just confirm I have got the steamveersion and and that I never possessed the DVD-version. I also never installed a pirated version before, so this can´t be the cause of my problems. The game is normally installed through steam, as the screenshot shows.

That picture is anonymous! Anyone could post it.
As i said your Programs list picture shows the Ubisoft version installed, while you say you have the Steam version.
This falls into the category 'Too weird'. Sorry, i can't help you.

Okay, the screenshot is anonymous because at first I didn´t want to show my steamname. Now I will upload a picture showing my accountname, which should be close enough to my name here, and one picture of my shophistory. If you want further proof, add me as a friend and I will answer you. Hopefully we can clear out the doubt on your side.

For this specific problem the right place would be the Steam support forums.

I see you didn't get responses there, in a thread where others are reporting the same problem.

Might be something in the latest Steam version/launcher/package whatever is causing this. I'll install virgin versions of today's Steam and the game on a test PC.

So i started a test:
I downloaded today and installed (on the default location: C:\Program Files (x86)).
Logged in, my complete purchased games list showed up in Library.
Installing only Dark Messiah Might and Magic singleplayer (downloading at the moment)

Download completed.
Verified game files.
Defragmented cache files.
Launched game by right-clicking it in the Library > Play game.
Game starts without a hitch and plays completely problem-free.

Conclusion: no problem with the latest Steam version and installation of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

  • Try a larger and fixed PagedPoolSize:
    • Open the registry editor:
Click Start > Run, type in
      regedit

      then hit Enter.
      In the Registry, navigate to:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Double click on "PagedPoolSize". Change the (hexadecimal) Value Data to:
      10000000

this will set 256MB Paged Pool.

      Reboot the PC.
    • Oh and very important: if one of the things you have tried is compatibility mode on mm.exe, make sure that is undone!
  • Make sure your page file is fixed.
    • How to set your virtual memory in Windows Vista / 7:
      - Right-click "Computer" > Properties. Under 'Tasks' select Advanced system settings > Continue > tab "Advanced" > under Performance, click button "Settings" > tab "Advanced" > Virtual memory > "Change..."
      - In both the minimum and maximum spaces enter “4096” (without the quotes) <--or more! Put the maximum value in both the min and max fields, see below
      - To validate this modification, click on the “Set” and then on the “OK” button to close the box
      - You must reboot your PC for these changes to take effect.

Although i don't expect any of these to fix the issue at hand, as it remains unusual that you have your Programs list showing the Ubisoft version as a seperate installation, while you say you have the Steam version.
