Dark Messiah Launch Issues

The game (non-steam version) installed normally, and I applied both patches without an issue. I'm having the following issues:

- Intro cinematics play, loading screen shows for a split second, then crash to desktop with no error message.
- Intro cinematics play, loading screen shows for unusually short period, then I can get to the menu but it's only half loaded (no music, no necromancer, some buttons don't work, etc.).

A small percentage of the time the menu loads properly and I can get into the game, but then the game is unplayable due to some strange stutter, and I also notice some performance issues. But I can't even begin to diagnose these issues until I can get into the game reliably.

I used to have no issues with this game back in the XP days. I think it was even fine on Vista. Now it's an absolute bugfest. This is the second PC I've tried it on recently, and the first one had a different set of launch issues and the same stutter.

Have you installed DirectX 9 redist? It doesn't com with Windows 7, you have to install it seperately.

Yes. Well, I use the dxwebsetup, because the latest redistributable is from 2010.

EDIT: I installed the June 2010 redist package anyway - I'm pretty sure the dxwebsetup includes everything from it though. Didn't make any difference to the DM issues.

The June 2010 IS in fact the latest version made. A newer package was released, but it added nothing new except bloatware, i forgot what it was... and doesn't matter.

Could you upload your settings please?
By export reg key:
In the Search box (just above the Start button) type:
regedit
hit Enter.
Navigate to the key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\mm]
you see in the picture below, and highlight it.

Right-click on the key > Export...
In the Name box, type for instance:
Valve_Source_mm-key
In the Filetype box leave it at 'Registryfile (*.reg)'.
Click Save.
It is by default saved into the Documents folder.

In your Documents folder, find this .reg file.
Right-click on it > Open with... select Notepad. Put your cursor into the text, select all then copy and paste it into your post.

Copy/paste to overwrite into your .reg file opened in Notepad. Save. Doubleclick the reg file to import it back into Registry.
Launch the game.

Let me know if you can get into the game normally with this.

What monitor do you have? Does it have 1:1 pixel mapping or "Aspect"? If you do, you could select in the game's menu any resolution and have black bars on the sides.
In some case the game seems to have trouble with 16:9 resolutions. Not with 4:3 or 16:10 modes.

Also, your videodrivers are almost a year outdated. Could you try their latest set? (nvidia.com)

Also, have you made sure that in the nVidia control panel the global settings value is "application controlled"?
