Yes do that. It WILL add the registry key automatically. Which is very handy exactly for situations like this.

Note: Steam *could* offer to move the singleplayer game into Steam an update it. CANCEL that. If Steam nevertheless puts the SP game in the My Games list, right-click on it > delete. (it only deletes it from the list).
