Crash by Runtime, and FPS drop in Stonehelm. (MP!)

Post by Cobsy »

Gettin crashes sometimes when I join servers in MP.

"Runtime Error!

Program: ...s\cobsy\Dark Messiah Might and Magic Multi-Player\mm.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application`s support team for more information"

This is the message I am getting when it crashes.

And also, the FPS-drop in Stonehelm happens when I am outside the gates. Looking towards them I have about 2-5 FPS and looking the other way I am Lag-free.

::EDIT:: I now seem to be getting the runtime error on the map Stonehelm!::EDIT::

As you requested I am now here :p I just reposted my topic here!

That looks in fine order.

Could you check if you have installed all Vista patches.
See DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 2] item =2=.

Also i noticed that games running on Vista are very sensitive to fragmentation. Make sure to defragment your harddiskdrive on a regulary basis. Do not use the inbuilt Windows defragger as it is much too slow, rather use a third party program. On Windows Vista try Auslogic (freeware). Seems to work excellently.

Wait. From your first post:
Program: ...s\cobsy\Dark Messiah Might and Magic Multi-Player\mm.exe
..."Dark Messiah Might and Magic Multi-Player" is not the normal annotation that Steam does.
The multiplayer game can only be run in Steam.
What did you change?
Post the full path to the exe please.

Might look suspicious ;)

F:\Steam\steamapps\cobsy\dark messiah might and magic multi-player

It is in my Steam folder, I bought the full game and registered it in steam, so I have both MP and SP installed there, Cobsy is simply my username there :)

And also, I'll check out the programs you told me about.
And I must inform you that I took a big "byte" of your pie ;) hehe x)

The pie is all yours, Cobsy! :D You were the first to register and post here besides myself, that's why.

"Cobsy"(your username) isn't what i found odd in the path you typed, it was the part i made bold and uses Capitals as first letter for each word. That made me think you maybe changed the directory for the multiplayer game instead of keeping it default. So that's solved then.

Another thing which is very important: the multiplayer game is played at lower settings than you may be used to in the singleplayer game (and both are completely different games, based on similar engine (Source) but different versions).
Just because you easily run the SP game at fully maxed out settings, do not do the same on the multiplayer game because then it will slow down regardless of the power of your gfx card. Just use the medium settings @ 1280 x 1024 or 1024 x 768. You don't play MP for the graphics anyway do you.

The game has been like that since I installed it, before I started getting that runtime error, my game would Disconnect me from some servers saying that my (mapname_cll/or something) differed from the server, I just deleted my local content and re-downloaded it.
After that I started getting the runtime error, wonder what will be next? ;p

BTW, I'm defragging my Game-HD now, hope things will start getting better :)

EDIT: my defrag is completed, everything seems in order

Cobsy i edited, ah well i'll post it again:

Another thing which is very important: the multiplayer game is played at lower settings than you may be used to in the singleplayer game (and both are completely different games, based on similar engine (Source) but different versions).
Just because with your GF 8800 GTX and very fine PC you easily run the SP game at fully maxed out settings, do not do the same on the multiplayer game because then it will slow down regardless of the power of your gfx card. Just use the medium settings @ 1280 x 1024 or 1024 x 768. You don't play MP for the graphics anyway do you.

See DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 2], scroll a bit down to the section about the Multiplayer installation. :)

Re: Crash by Runtime, and FPS drop in Stonehelm. (MP!)

Post by Cobsy »

Actually I like the graphics maxed either if it's MP or SP ;p
My computer have handled alot of games my last computer couldn't dream of :p

But do you think turning down the GFX on MP would make it any better? I mean, I am lag-free other than what I saw on the gates of Stonehelm.
I also just crashed, but that was the regular "stopped working" from windows :< I'll just try again, and I'll check out a map with stonehelm to see if theres any difference now.
First time I installed the game onto my computer I could run Stonehelm perfect, it was later on that I got FPS-drop whilst looking towards the gates, pretty weird if you ask me.

Well. still lagging at some points of Stonehelm, I could not turn down the video-settings ingame, so i had to exit and restart to change, will try again
now.

Put my advanced settings down to the recommended stars (*)
and it helped for the stonehelm lag, but then again I had 300 ping, so no good playin on that server :)
But ill see what's up with the runtime error if I can only get a round at a server now.

I officially set a new record with 5 rounds before the runtime did it's revenge ;)
Guess the defrag might have worked a bit after all. But oh well, guess it's something I just might have to live with.

Yeah i told you: defragging can really make a noticeable difference. Especially on the singleplayer game, because it has very large files, so the game operates best when they stay contiguous.
I don't really play multiplayer, only tried it out for testing. Does the MP have a Stonehelm level? Or are you talking about MP then SP then MP again? Btw, i seem to remember the multiplaying guys posting about lags at certain spots that everyone had so you'd just have to live with.

Baseline again: multiplayer DM is technically a clumsy product, best played at 1024x768 at medium settings regardless your hardware's capacities.
Singleplayer DM is technically as superb as Source can be and greatly benefits of high end hardware, where it shines at its best.
