Re: My new PC (Aug 2015) - Asus Maximus VII Hero

Post by Blín D'ñero »

I bought a new Cooler for my CPU to replace the Zalman CPNS9900A LED: the Noctua NH-D15S which is identical to the Noctua NH-D15 except that (besides that it comes with only 1 fan) it has its massive body moved to one side (the 'up' side of the motherboard) relative to its base so that it does not cover the first PCI-E slot on my Asus Maximus Hero, so i don't have to remove my ZxR soundcard which is seated in the upper PCI-E slot!

The Noctua NH-D15S comes with only one fan, so i am curious to how it will perform compared to my current Zalman CPNS9900-A LED CPU cooler on my 4790K @ 4.4 Ghz: i get 74° C on the CPU (= the lid), the cores well over the 80's ° C on the hottest core, in the Everest stress test, at 22° C room temperature.

EDIT: it is overall 0.5 to 1 degree celsius cooler during the everest stress test. I call this room temperature fluctuation. I am not convinced there is a significant difference. I would say they perform the same.
The Zalman has a very efficient airflow as it blows freely through a hole in the circle of copper.
The Noctua (i have only one fan installed between the 2 metal towers) is blowing & sucking through two large metal grilles. It has maybe 4 times more metal cooling surface than the Zalman.

Both are top notch, powerful and effective.
The Noctua is quieter!

Installing a new USB 3.0 card reader was a drag again. Hours and hours of my personal lifetime wasted.

After reinstalling Intel_USB3_Win7_v30141.

Hardware recognition / shakehands? in motherboard / windows and between the two apparently took a lot of time without any sign that anything was happening. Maybe i was not patient enough?

Anyway, in the end i reached full success! Happiness.

Now updating my previous post with the bios settings...

Once Windows 10 installed, an issue comes up, for which this update says is the fix, BUT SINCE WINDOWS 10 UPDATE 1903 - MY VERSION IS 1909- IT DOES NOT :
Utilities
Version 1.05.14
2018/01/25
146.47 MBytes

Dual Intelligent Processors 5
Fix compatibility issue with the latest Windows updates. Dual Intelligent Processors 5 update v1.05.14 patches an issue that resulted in the Windows power plan being forced to “balanced". Note that this patched build only includes the DIP5 utility, it does not include other utilities in AI Suite 3.
- AI Suite 3 v3.00.13
- Dual Intelligent Processors 5 v1.05.14
A big mess. Using System Restore to undo! :violin:

Not installing it again. It's useless.

I solved the issue! :D

It was my Startech internal UHX card reader (35FCREADBU3). Very good device.
Windows 10 kept saying the device was not recognized. Red problem devices in Device Manager, and many many times the same notification.

The fix:
1. shut down the pc, then plug out the usb device's cable on the motherboard.
2. Restart PC and let windows relax for a while.
3. Shut down PC, then plug the usb device's cable on the motherboard IN again.
4. Restart PC.
Problem has vanished.

So while i'm completing my new (2020) PC, i have also upgraded my previous "First" PC, which is the Asus Maximus VII Hero with i7 4790K in this thread.
With a Corsair Force mp510 ssd, to make it my Windows 10 drive to boot from.

Initially that would not work... and i found only trouble messages on the internets. On top of that, according to Corsair, the drive does not even support x97:

Form Factor: M.2 SSD
Supported Platforms: Intel® 100, 200, 300, X99, X299 Chipsets, AMD Socket AM4 Platform, X399
But i got it to work baby! :D

the m2 card with OS (win 10) on it,
and all the SATA drives filled: 7 HDD's and 1 DVD drive).

Details if i can find the time.
