My New PC (March 2020) - Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Post by Blín D'ñero »

[One day i accidentally deleted this post! So this is a Repost from a backup.]
Original post by Blín D'ñero » Sun Feb 16, 2020 8:16 pm

So this is my newest workstation PC, for Photoshop and Lightroom, on a Dell U3011 monitor @ adobeRGB !, and also Gaming (which i never seem to find the time for anymore).
[My previous (My new PC (Aug 2015) - Asus Maximus VII Hero) has become my Office PC. That also does Photoshop and Lightroom very well, but i use it merely for basic work related office photos at sRGB quality, on a Dell Monitor P4317Q].

I started collecting components in february this year. Studied many reviews ( textually as well as youtube-ally ) while carefully laying out my plan for myself in this post.

I have built the actual PC in the first two weeks of march. Ready and running with Windows 10 since march 15.

Components:
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800x AMD Ryzen 7 3800x (amd.com); more specs (techpowerup.com)
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 AMD Ryzen Memory Kit (this one)
PSU: Corsair HX1000
graphics: MSI Radeon 5700XT
audio: Creative AE-9PE
The two M.2 SocketS: 2 x Corsair Force MP600 500GB M.2 SSD
SATA: 7 x WD Gold HDD's (4 x 8 TB; 1 x 4 TB; 1 x 6TB; 1 x 10 TB)
SATA: 1 x Asus DVD burner DRW-24D5MT

TWO pci-e 4.0 ssd's.
https://www.asus.com/us/site/motherboards/AMD-X570/
PCIe 4.0 provides an extreme bandwidth for extreme storage and peripherals. Four lanes of PCIe 4.0 give NVMe SSDs peak raw bandwidth of 7.9GB/s, compared to approximately 4GB/s from PCIe 3.0. Graphics cards in PCIe 4.0 x16 slots will have nearly 32GB/s of bandwidth available, laying the foundation for games with higher-resolution textures and letting machine-learning algorithms access more data faster than ever before.

DUAL PCIE 4.0 M.2

Dual PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots support up to type 22110 and provide NVMe SSD RAID support for an incredible performance boost. Create a RAID configuration with up to two PCIe 4.0 storage devices to enjoy the fastest data-transfer speeds on the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen platform.
Yes, i'm a power user. I like storage, no it is actually very important to me.
As is: optimum build- and components quality.
So i also selected: MSI Radeon 5700XT
Corsair M2 SSD
WD Gold HDD's

Re: My New PC (March 2020) - Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Post by Blín D'ñero »

Noise coming from the PC's backside under load (for instance during PCMark10 / 3DMark benchmarking). Already a little bit of it at idle. I first suspected the PSU, then found out it wasn't; then suspected the backside case fan but it wasn't, it wasn't the MSI 5700XT because its fan doesn't turn at idle... and then when i opened the case it sounded like the shreeking - no, chirping is the word i think- noise came from the CPU cooler! Could that be???

I have the NH-D15 SE-AM4 (this one).

Then on this page i found:
FAQ: Does the NF-A15 PWM that comes with Noctua coolers run at a different speed (1500rpm) than the retail model (1200rpm)?

Yes, the NF-A15 PWM bundled with our heatsinks is specified to run at 1500rpm (see cooler specifications for details) and the retail model is specified to run at 1200rpm (see fan specifications for details).
The 1200rpm retail model is ideal for setting up push/pull configurations in combination with the coolers’ 1500rpm stock fan because the combination of the 1500 and 1200rpm models provides a better balance of performance and noise than the combination of two 1500rpm versions.

On dual-tower coolers such as the NH-D15S, we recommend to run the 1500rpm version in the center and the 1200rpm version on the front.

On single-tower coolers such as the NH-U14S, we recommend to run the 1500rpm version on the front and the 1200rpm version on the back of the cooler.

The NA-YC1 y-cable supplied with the retail fan can be used in order to control both fans via one PWM fan header. In this case, both fans will scale individually according to the PWM duty cycle supplied by the motherboard, e.g. they will run at ~1500/1200 respectively at 100% duty cycle, ~750/600rpm at 50% duty cycle, etc. Both at 100% and lower speeds, the speed difference between the fans reduces resonance phenomena and thus helps to achieve the best balance of performance and noise.
Well, in the paper "installation manual" with the cooler, this is only mentioned as optional ("if necessary") so i overlooked it.

So, after installing the y-cable.

I am running my (PCMark10 / 3DMark) tests now...

Edit: result is that it gets considerably better.

But i still hear some of it, so my conclusion: you cannot get it totally silent with these 2 CPU fans under load. But that's probably too much to ask from air cooling.
